Our Experience With Alcoa
- We have partnered with Alcoa for over 3 years in the delivery of tailored emergency response and safety training
- Our training has involved many of the Cert III Public Safety (Firefighting & Emergency Operations) units of competency
- We continue to receive great feedback due to the consistency of our trainers and the knowledge and experience of our trainers
Production began at Portland Aluminium in 1986 and today the smelter produces approximately 358,000 tonnes of aluminium a year. Alcoa is Victoria’s largest exporter and nearly all of the aluminium produced at Portland Aluminium is exported to the Asian market. Alcoa Aluminium which is located in Yennora Portland Victoria (approx. 400km West of Melbourne) has 600 employees.
In 2009, Fire and Safety Australia was approached by Alcoa and their HR strategic partners to take control of all emergency response team training following some negative feedback with another training provider. FSA took the time to review the ERT operations on-site with our 3 key personnel from Victoria (CEO, Trainer Team Leader, Business Development Manager) and structure a training program which involved completing all Cert III Public Safety level units of competency every 3 years. This emergency response training has been delivered mainly across weekends to avoid production loss to Alcoa.
We have been able to tailor the training specifically to the requirements of Alcoa and our training has involved:
- Vertical Rescue Training
- Confined Space Rescue Training
- HAZMAT Training
- ‘HOT’ Fire Training
Our training is always conducted on-site (with the exception of HOT fire training) so that we can drill and exercise on specific buildings and rehearse incidents that are possible on-site. We are pleased to continue to partner with Alcoa for the period 2013-2015 and roll out the Cert III course again over the next 3 years and induct new members of the emergency response team.
