Our nationally accredited training is designed for companies wishing to develop their Emergency Response Team’s level of knowledge and skills in firefighting and emergency response. This qualification reflects the role of an emergency response team (ERT) member; they perform tasks involving a broad range of varied activities most of which are urgent, complex and non-routine.

Participants will ideally be currently engaged in firefighting and emergency response activities in the workplace, or looking to enter this field.

This course is designed for organisations and individuals responsible for emergency response and public safety roles including:

  • Emergency response teams
  • Fire service personnel
  • Mines rescue crew personnel

FSA Entry Requirements:

• USI and Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
• Fitness to participate declaration (physically demanding course)
• Participants need to be clean-shaven, meeting the Australian Standards, when using Breathing Apparatus equipment
• Clothing and PPE appropriate to delivery site and course structure – this may include fire rated PPE.
• Unrestricted driving licence
• All pre-requisite requirements are met and evidence received by FSA from the student, verified by the issuing RTO.

Group Size:



20 – 30 Workshop Days delivered over an extended period of 12 months minimum, depending on experience of the learners and the elective units chosen, plus on the job training.

This is a 12 month course conducted in a blended combination of face to face delivery and on-job training, requiring up to 1040 hours of study. Students are required to attend workshops throughout the 12 month period for between 20 to 30 days (160 – 360 hours) depending on their electives chosen, and spend an additional 880 hours undertaking on the job training, liaising with their trainer, undertaking regular site based skills training days, as part of their Emergency Response Team Training and submitting logbooks.

A client specific delivery plan will be developed and “rationale” on the duration will take into account the participants and their experience, however based on the below “typical” module format, face to face delivery duration is between 20 – 30 days. Finalised delivery plans will have a confirmed timeframe.

Mode of Delivery:

The course aims to be offered in two main options

  1. Face to face learning and assessment and on the job skills development and maintenance days as part of regular Emergency Response Team training
  2. RPL and Mutual Recognition

Option 1

Face to Face learning as assessments includes the modulated delivery of units of competency

  • Lectures and discussions facilitated by FSA Trainer/Assessor
  • Skills demonstrations by FSA Trainer/Assessor and opportunities for participants to practice and demonstration their skill level prior to any assessment be undertaken.
  • Theory assessments

On the job skills development days

  • Ongoing development and maintenance of skills and knowledge through regular Emergency Response Team training

Training logbooks, developed, maintained and submitted to support on the job training evidence over 12 month period

Option 2

RPL and Mutual Recogniton

  • FSA has a RPL / Mutual recognition policy and process, along with dedicated resources for the application, assessment and awarding of this qualification under RPL and/or Mutual Recognition
